With the recent British and the Senior British Opens still fresh in our consciousness, golfer's annual calling to visit and play the courses where the game originated is at its strongest. Who wouldn't want to tee it up at the Old Course at St. Andrews or Carnoustie, especially right after watching the world's best players compete on these legendary tracks?

On the 4th of July the members of Spanish Trail Golf and Country Club in Las Vegas enjoyed the unveiling of the newly renovated Canyon Course. The nine-hole course began renovations in 2007 under the direction of Houston-based Baxter Spann of Finger, Dye, Spann, Inc. Spann provided the club a master plan that kept the layout true to the original Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design but provided additional enhancements. Full Story |
Tahoe's newest golf course, Timilick Tahoe, opened this past weekend. Nestled between North Star and Squaw Valley ski resorts, the 7,000-yard co-design by John Harbottle and Johnny Miller is the centerpiece of a 475-acre gated community off Highway 267 near Truckee, Calif. Full Story |

The FAM is history, a week of media types playing golf around Lake Tahoe finished. They wanted us to get the feel of the diversity of desert golf one day and mountain golf the next, of the misplaced urban energy during a stop in the old railroad town of Truckee and the blessed lack of same in the Mohawk Valley of California's Plumas County. What do you talk about on a golf media trip? Golf, of course. During the six-day trip around Lake Tahoe, we talked about the guy who paid $100 to get his golf bag from Denver to Reno on United Airlines. He'll pay the same amount to get it back. As he understood it, there would be no charge if it were the only bag he checked. Presuming it didn't weigh more than 50 pounds.

So this Fam trip, or media tour, isn't just about playing one great golf course after another. We had a choice one afternoon whether we wanted to play Coyote Moon, in the mountains near Lake Tahoe, or do something to improve your game. Coyote Moon is spectacular. My golf game isn't.
